An excellent opportunity has arisen for an Orthopaedic Senior House Officer (SHO) to join the orthopaedic surgery service at University Hospital Waterford with clinical sessions also based at Kilcreene Regional Orthopaedic Hospital. This fixed-term, whole-time post offers high-quality exposure to acute orthopaedics, trauma care, and elective surgery within a structured HSE training environment.
The role is ideal for doctors seeking to consolidate orthopaedic competencies, gain supervised operative experience, and progress within surgical training pathways.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide day-to-day medical care for orthopaedic inpatients and trauma admissions
• Participate in orthopaedic ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and theatre sessions
• Assist with trauma calls, fracture management, and post-operative care
• Contribute to on-call and out-of-hours rotas in line with NCHD requirements
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation and discharge summaries
• Liaise effectively with consultants, registrars, nursing staff, and allied health professionals
• Participate in audit, clinical governance, and continuous professional development
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Medical degree recognised by the Medical Council of Ireland
• Active or eligible registration with the Medical Council of Ireland
• Minimum of 12 months post-internship clinical experience
• Prior experience in orthopaedics or surgical specialties is desirable
• Strong communication, teamwork, and organisational skills
• Commitment to patient safety, quality care, and professional development
Salary, Benefits & Working Hours
• Grade: Senior House Officer – Surgery (Code 1012)
• Salary Scale: €54,203 – €74,133 per annum (point dependent, effective 1 August 2025)
• Additional on-call and premium payments in line with HSE NCHD terms
• Fixed-term, whole-time contract
