University Hospital Galway is seeking a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon to join its established ophthalmology service. This permanent wholetime role offers the opportunity to deliver specialist eye care within a major teaching hospital serving the West and North West region. The post combines clinical excellence, leadership, and service development within a multidisciplinary environment.

Key Responsibilities
• Provide consultant-level ophthalmic surgical and clinical services
• Deliver high-quality patient-centred care across elective and emergency settings
• Participate in on-call and emergency ophthalmology services as required
• Lead and contribute to service planning, audit, and clinical governance
• Supervise and support NCHDs, trainees, and multidisciplinary colleagues
• Engage in teaching, training, and continuous professional development
• Contribute to research and quality improvement initiatives
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Specialist registration with the Irish Medical Council in Ophthalmology
• Eligibility for appointment as Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon under HSE criteria
• Demonstrated expertise in ophthalmic surgery and clinical ophthalmology
• Strong leadership, communication, and teamwork skills
• Commitment to clinical governance, audit, and patient safety
• Experience in teaching and mentoring is desirable
Salary, Benefits & Working Hours
• Salary in line with HSE Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon (Grade 1147) consolidated pay scales
• Salary progression and long service increments apply in accordance with national agreements• Permanent wholetime contract, 37 hours per week
