Letterkenny University Hospital, under HSE West and North West, is seeking an experienced and visionary nursing leader to join its senior management team as Assistant Director of Nursing. This permanent, whole-time post offers a senior nurse the opportunity to shape clinical standards, drive service improvement, and support the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care across one of the region’s key acute settings.

About the Role

As Assistant Director of Nursing, you will provide professional and operational leadership to nursing teams, working closely with the Director of Nursing to deliver an effective, patient-centred service. The role carries significant responsibility for clinical governance, workforce planning, resource management, and the continuous development of nursing practice in line with national HSE standards and best evidence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strong professional and operational leadership to nursing teams across designated services.
  • Support the Director of Nursing in the strategic and day-to-day management of the nursing function.
  • Promote and maintain high standards of clinical governance, patient safety, and quality of care.
  • Lead workforce planning, rostering, and the effective deployment of nursing resources.
  • Drive service improvement, change management, and the implementation of national policy.
  • Mentor, develop, and support nursing staff to build capability and sustain a positive working culture.

Requirements

  • Registration in the General Division of the Register of Nurses maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), or eligibility to register.
  • Substantial post-registration nursing experience, including significant experience at a senior or management level.
  • Demonstrated leadership, clinical governance, and people-management capability.
  • Sound knowledge of current health service strategy, standards, and quality frameworks.
  • Strong communication, planning, and decision-making skills.

Salary

€68,493 – €82,015 per annum (HSE Assistant Director of Nursing, Non-Band 1 Hospitals scale, 8-point scale, plus LSIs where applicable), based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 February 2026.

Location

This role is based in County Donegal within HSE West and North West, the region covering Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo, and Galway. As Assistant Director of Nursing you will work at the heart of acute hospital services in the north west, contributing directly to the quality and safety of care delivered to communities across the region. It is a high-impact senior post within a large, integrated health system, offering genuine scope to influence nursing practice and patient outcomes at scale.
