The Role
As a Catering Officer Grade III at Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise, you will play a central part in the planning, coordination, and delivery of high-quality catering services across the hospital. This is a supervisory and management-level position within the catering function, requiring both operational oversight and a strong focus on standards, compliance, and team leadership. The role encompasses responsibility for food safety, budgetary awareness, staff management, and the overall patient dining experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and supervise catering operations across designated areas of the hospital, ensuring consistent delivery of nutritional, safe, and patient-centred food services.
- Ensure compliance with HACCP principles, food safety legislation, and HSE hygiene standards at all times.
- Lead, mentor, and manage catering staff, including rosters, performance, and ongoing development.
- Contribute to menu planning, stock control, and cost management in line with budgetary requirements.
- Liaise with clinical and nursing staff regarding patient dietary needs and special requirements.
- Participate in audit processes, quality improvement initiatives, and the implementation of catering policies and procedures.
- Deputise for senior catering management as required.
Requirements

- Relevant qualifications and/or substantial experience in catering management or a related discipline.
- Proven supervisory experience within a large-scale catering or food service environment.
- Sound knowledge of food safety legislation, HACCP, and best practice in institutional catering.
- Strong organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team in a busy acute hospital setting.

Salary
€36,109 – €55,463 per annum (HSE Catering Officer Grade III scale, 12-point scale, plus LSIs where applicable), based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 February 2026.
