About the Role
The Clinical Midwife Manager 2 / Shift Leader holds a pivotal position within the Maternity Unit at St Luke’s General Hospital. Rotating between day and night duty, the post-holder provides clinical leadership and operational oversight while on shift, ensuring the highest standards of midwifery care are consistently delivered. This is a role for a midwife who combines strong clinical expertise with the ability to lead, motivate, and develop a team in a busy general hospital environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and co-ordinate the Midwifery team while rostered on duty, rotating across day and night shifts.
- Manage and allocate resources effectively within the clinical area to support safe, efficient service delivery.
- Drive quality assurance initiatives and maintain compliance with professional and clinical standards.
- Support staffing needs and contribute to staff development, appraisal, and performance management.
- Facilitate practice development and promote evidence-based midwifery care.
- Act as the primary communication link between the team, management, and multidisciplinary colleagues while on shift.
- Contribute to service planning and the ongoing development of the Maternity Unit.
- Provide professional and clinical leadership, acting as a role model for the team.
Requirements and Qualifications
Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria for Clinical Midwife Manager 2 as set out by the HSE and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). This typically includes current active registration as a midwife on the NMBI register and relevant post-registration experience in a clinical leadership or senior midwifery capacity. Salary
€62,699 – €79,227 per annum (HSE Clinical Midwife Manager 2 scale, 11-point scale, plus Long Service Increments (LSIs) where applicable). Based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 June 2026.

St Luke’s General Hospital is the acute general hospital serving County Kilkenny and surrounding areas within the HSE Dublin and South East region. The hospital provides a broad range of inpatient, outpatient, and maternity services to the local population. The role is based on-site at the Kilkenny campus.
