Craftsman – Plumber — St. Luke’s General Hospital, Kilkenny
St. Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny is recruiting a qualified Plumber (Craftsman grade) to join its Technical Services Department on a permanent, whole-time basis. This is a great opportunity for an experienced plumbing professional to contribute to the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of a busy acute general hospital within the HSE Dublin and South East region.
Role Overview
The Plumber Craftsman will work as part of the Technical Services team at St. Luke’s General Hospital, Kilkenny, maintaining and servicing the hospital’s plumbing and mechanical infrastructure. The role requires a fully qualified tradesperson capable of carrying out planned maintenance, reactive repairs, and minor capital works across a live clinical environment. The post is permanent and whole-time, offering stable, long-term employment within the public health service.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems, pipework, sanitary fittings, and associated equipment throughout the hospital.
- Perform planned preventive maintenance (PPM) tasks in accordance with the hospital’s maintenance schedule.
- Respond to reactive maintenance requests and urgent breakdowns in a timely and effective manner.
- Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation, HTM (Health Technical Memoranda), and hospital infection control requirements, including water safety and legionella management protocols.
- Assist in the planning and execution of minor capital projects and refurbishment works.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, materials used, and works completed.
- Liaise with and support other trades and Technical Services staff to ensure coordinated delivery of estate maintenance services.
- Adhere to all HSE health and safety policies and procedures at all times.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Hold a valid, recognised apprenticeship trade qualification in Plumbing (FETAC/QQI Level 6 or equivalent).
- Be registered with SOLAS or hold equivalent recognised certification as a qualified plumber.
- Possess demonstrable experience working as a qualified plumber, ideally in a healthcare, commercial, or industrial environment.
- Have a sound working knowledge of plumbing and heating systems, water services, and associated plant equipment.
- Demonstrate ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy, operational environment.
- Be familiar with relevant health and safety regulations and best practice for estates maintenance in a clinical setting.
Salary
€42,486 – €48,246 per annum (HSE Plumber scale, Grade 5134, 9-point scale before LSIs), plus Long Service Increments (LSIs) of €48,534 and €48,853 after qualifying service at the maximum point. Salary is based on the HSE Consolidated Pay Scales effective 1 June 2026, in accordance with Department of Health Circular 2/2026.
Location
St. Luke’s General Hospital, Kilkenny, is the principal acute hospital serving counties Kilkenny and Carlow, providing a wide range of inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services. The Technical Services Department maintains the full hospital estate, and the successful candidate will be based on-site at the Kilkenny campus. The hospital is a key facility within HSE Dublin and South East, operating under the national health infrastructure framework.
