Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, Co. Louth, is seeking an experienced Haemovigilance Officer to lead and strengthen the transfusion safety service across the Louth Hospitals network. This is a permanent, whole-time post working at the highest specialist level in blood transfusion practice, quality assurance, and clinical education.
About the Role
The Haemovigilance Officer operates as a specialist advisor, consultant, and educator on all matters relating to the transfusion of blood and blood products. Working as part of the Louth Hospitals Haemovigilance team, the postholder carries responsibility for ensuring the safety and integrity of the transfusion system, from clinical practice auditing through to legislative compliance and accreditation standards.
This is a role with genuine impact — the Haemovigilance Officer is the authoritative voice on transfusion safety within the hospital, shaping practice, protecting patients, and ensuring the service meets the highest national and international standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the safety of the transfusion system in line with national legislation and accreditation requirements
- Educate clinical staff on best transfusion practice across all relevant departments
- Audit transfusion practice throughout the hospital, identifying and addressing non-conforming processes
- Review, develop, and establish transfusion guidelines and standard operating procedures
- Act as the primary resource for advice and information relating to transfusion issues
- Investigate and report Serious Adverse Events (SAEs), Serious Adverse Reactions (SARs), and non-conforming processes
- Participate actively in internal and external quality control, quality assurance, and audit programmes
- Contribute to the Louth Hospitals Haemovigilance team objectives and service planning
Requirements & Qualifications
Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria set out in the HSE campaign documentation for the Haemovigilance Officer grade (6005). This typically includes relevant scientific or healthcare registration, postgraduate qualification or equivalent specialist experience in haemovigilance or transfusion medicine, and demonstrated leadership in a clinical or laboratory environment. Salary
€62,448 – €83,514 per annum (HSE Haemovigilance Officer scale, 9-point scale), based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 June 2026. Appointment will be made at the appropriate point on the scale in line with HSE incremental credit policy.
