The Health Service Executive (HSE) is recruiting a Grade V Staff Officer for the AIRE Support function based at BreastCheck Western Unit in Galway. This is a permanent, wholetime position offering an opportunity to contribute to a vital national cancer screening programme in an administrative leadership capacity.

About the Role
This Grade V Staff Officer position supports the AIRE (Artificial Intelligence in Radiology/Examination) function within the National Screening Service (NSS). The postholder will provide high-level administrative and operational support within BreastCheck’s Western Unit, working as part of a nationally-coordinated screening service.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive administrative support to the AIRE Support function within BreastCheck Western Unit
- Manage correspondence, records, and information systems in line with HSE policies and procedures
- Coordinate and support the operational activities of the unit, ensuring effective service delivery
- Prepare reports, minutes, and documentation as required by management
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders across the National Screening Service
- Supervise and support clerical staff where appropriate to grade
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of administrative systems and processes
- Ensure compliance with data protection, confidentiality, and governance requirements
Requirements and Qualifications
Eligible applicants must, on the closing date, meet one of the following criteria:
- Have satisfactory experience as a Clerical Officer in the HSE, TUSLA, other statutory health agencies, or a body providing services under Section 38 of the Health Act 2004; or
- Hold a pass (Grade D) in at least five subjects from the approved Leaving Certificate subject list, including Mathematics and English or Irish, with at least Grade C in three higher level papers; or
- Have completed a comparable examination in an equivalent jurisdiction; or
- Hold a relevant third-level qualification at a minimum of Level 6 on the National Qualifications Framework (QQI)
Note: A pass in a foundation-level paper does not satisfy the Leaving Certificate requirement. The Leaving Certificate Applied Programme does not fulfil eligibility criteria. All candidates must possess the requisite knowledge, ability, and suitability to discharge the duties of the office, and must meet the health and character standards required for the post.
Salary
€52,758 – €59,245 per annum (HSE Grade V Clerical scale, 5-point scale, based on HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 June 2026). Long Service Increments (LSIs) apply at €61,174 and €63,110 for eligible staff. Salary is paid in accordance with public sector pay policy.

BreastCheck Western Unit, Newcastle Road, Galway, H91 YR4R. BreastCheck is Ireland’s national breast screening programme, operated by the National Screening Service (NSS) as part of the HSE. The Western Unit serves women across the west of Ireland and forms part of a wider network of BreastCheck units operating nationally.
