Abbott Ireland is hiring an experienced Automation Engineer for its Cootehill facility in Co. Cavan — the company’s largest global site for infant nutrition production. This role offers the opportunity to design, implement, and optimise cutting-edge automation systems in a fast-paced, highly regulated manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
System Design & Optimisation
• Develop automation solutions that enhance efficiency and support production demand
• Produce complex process flow sheets, instrumentation layouts, and control strategies
• Model processes and unit operations to ensure correct sequencing
• Lead installation, testing, commissioning, and software validation activities
Project Collaboration & Planning
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define project scope and objectives
• Prepare detailed project plans, including budgets and timelines
Operational Technology & Support
• Troubleshoot automation hardware, software, and network systems
• Support and maintain SCADA, Siemens PLCs, and OSIsoft Pi
• Conduct tests across production stages to monitor variables such as temperature and pressure
Compliance & Documentation
• Ensure compliance with FDA cGxP, 21 CFR Part 11, GAMP, and internal standards
• Create and maintain technical documentation, SOPs, and project reports
• Assist in corrective and preventive action procedures
Training & Continuous Improvement
• Provide training for end-users and support ongoing improvements
• Stay informed on new automation technologies and best practices
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline
• Minimum 2+ years’ experience in automation or control systems
• Knowledge of FDA cGxP, 21 CFR Part 11, and GAMP preferred
• Familiarity with Siemens PLCs, SCADA, and historian systems
• Understanding of ISA-88, ISA-95, and PackML standards an advantage
• Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving abilities
• Ability to collaborate effectively and adapt to new technologies
