Cork University Hospital is recruiting a Catering Officer Grade II to join its Catering Department on a specified purpose whole-time basis. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced catering professional to take on a management-level role within one of Ireland’s leading acute hospital settings, contributing directly to patient care and hospital operations in HSE South West.

The Role

The Catering Officer Grade II is a supervisory and operational management position within the Catering Department at Cork University Hospital. The post holder will oversee the delivery of catering services to patients, staff, and visitors, ensuring high standards of food safety, nutrition, and service quality are maintained at all times. The role carries responsibility for staff supervision, compliance with food hygiene legislation, and the efficient day-to-day management of catering activities across the department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise catering staff across assigned areas of Cork University Hospital’s Catering Department.
  • Ensure the highest standards of food safety, hygiene, and HACCP compliance are maintained in line with current legislation and HSE policies.
  • Oversee the planning, preparation, and service of meals to patients, ensuring nutritional standards and dietary requirements are met.
  • Monitor and manage catering resources, including staffing, equipment, and food supplies, to ensure cost-effective and efficient service delivery.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of catering policies, procedures, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Liaise with nursing, dietetic, and other clinical staff to support patient-centred catering services.
  • Prepare reports and maintain accurate records as required by hospital management.
  • Deputise for more senior catering management as required.

Requirements

Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria set out in the Job Specification. Typically, this includes a relevant qualification in catering, hospitality management, or a related field, together with demonstrable supervisory or management experience in a large-scale catering environment. Experience in a healthcare or institutional catering setting is desirable. Candidates should have a thorough working knowledge of food safety legislation and HACCP principles.

Salary

€52,235 – €58,659 per annum (HSE Catering Officer Grade II scale, 5-point incremental scale, plus Long Service Increments where applicable), based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 February 2026.

Location

The post holder will be based in the Catering Department at Cork University Hospital (Ospidéal na hOllscoile, Corcaigh), a major tertiary referral centre and academic teaching hospital serving the wider Munster region. Cork University Hospital is one of the largest and busiest acute hospitals in Ireland, providing a broad range of specialist services and forming a central part of healthcare delivery under HSE South West. This is an on-site, operational management role.

Contract

Specified Purpose, Whole-Time. There is currently one whole-time temporary vacancy available. A panel may be formed from this campaign for Cork University Hospital, from which current and future permanent and specified purpose vacancies of full or part-time duration may be filled.
