University Hospital Waterford, part of the HSE Dublin and South East region, is seeking a dedicated Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our Neurology department. This permanent wholetime position offers the opportunity to provide specialized neurological care in a leading acute hospital setting. About the Role
As a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Neurology at University Hospital Waterford, you will provide expert clinical leadership and specialized care to patients with neurological conditions. This permanent position involves working within a multidisciplinary team to deliver evidence-based neurological care, patient education, and clinical guidance. You will report to the Assistant Director of Nursing and play a key role in advancing neurological care standards within our department.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialized clinical assessment and management of patients with neurological disorders including stroke, brain injury, epilepsy, and degenerative neurological conditions
- Lead and mentor nursing staff in evidence-based neurological care practices and protocols
- Develop and implement clinical guidelines and care pathways specific to neurological conditions
- Collaborate with neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes
- Conduct comprehensive neurological assessments and monitor patient progress using specialized neurological scales and tools
- Provide expert consultation and education to nursing staff, patients, and families regarding neurological conditions and treatments
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical audits within the neurology department
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
- Degree in Nursing or equivalent professional qualification
- Minimum 5 years post-registration experience with significant experience in neurological nursing
- Demonstrated expertise in neurological assessment, care planning, and management of neurological conditions
- Strong clinical leadership and mentoring skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for patient, family, and multidisciplinary team interaction
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-graduate qualification in Neurology, Critical Care, or related specialty
- Experience in stroke care, neuro-rehabilitation, or acute neurological conditions
- Leadership or management experience in healthcare settings
- Research experience or involvement in clinical improvement projects
- Additional certifications in neurological assessment tools and techniques
