Consultant Microbiologist – Microbiology – Midlands | HSE

The Health Service Executive ( HSE) Dublin and Midlands is seeking an experienced Consultant Microbiologist to join our dynamic medical team across two key locations. This permanent wholetime position offers a unique opportunity to work 18.5 hours per week at Midlands Regional Hospital, Tullamore, and 18.5 hours per week within the HSE Dublin & Midlands region, providing comprehensive microbiology services to our diverse patient population.

About the Role

As a Consultant Microbiologist with HSE Dublin and Midlands, you will provide expert clinical microbiology services across our healthcare network, focusing on diagnostic microbiology, infection control, and antimicrobial stewardship. This split-site position allows you to contribute to both acute hospital services and broader regional healthcare delivery while working with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead clinical microbiology services and provide expert consultation on complex infectious disease cases
  • Oversee laboratory operations and quality assurance in microbiology diagnostics
  • Develop and implement antimicrobial stewardship programs across both service locations
  • Collaborate with infection prevention and control teams to minimize healthcare-associated infections
  • Provide clinical leadership in outbreak investigation and management
  • Mentor junior medical staff and contribute to medical education programs
  • Participate in clinical governance and quality improvement initiatives

Required Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • Medical degree with specialist registration in Medical Microbiology
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland
  • Minimum 5 years post-specialty registration experience in clinical microbiology
  • Expertise in diagnostic microbiology, antimicrobial resistance, and infection control
  • Current certification in relevant clinical microbiology subspecialties

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in antimicrobial stewardship program development
  • Research experience in clinical microbiology or infectious diseases
  • Leadership experience in laboratory management
  • Additional qualifications in infection prevention and control
