University Hospital Limerick is seeking an experienced Haemovigilance Officer Limerick to join its Blood Transfusion service on a permanent wholetime basis. This is a critical patient safety role within HSE Mid West, supporting safe transfusion practices, haemovigilance reporting, and compliance with national standards.
This position offers the opportunity to play a central role in quality assurance, risk management, and clinical governance within transfusion services at one of the region’s leading acute hospitals.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee haemovigilance systems and ensure compliance with national and EU blood safety standards.
- Monitor and review transfusion practices to ensure patient safety and best clinical outcomes.
- Investigate and report transfusion reactions, incidents, and near misses.
- Support clinical teams in safe blood and blood component administration.
- Promote the appropriate use of blood products and transfusion therapy.
- Maintain accurate haemovigilance records and contribute to audit processes.
- Support implementation and optimisation of electronic transfusion systems.
- Deliver education and training programmes related to transfusion safety.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Demonstrated depth and breadth of experience in the transfusion process.
- Experience in haemovigilance and transfusion therapy practices.
- Knowledge of information technology systems in haemovigilance, including blood collection kiosks and electronic sample collection systems.
- Experience with personal device-assisted electronic sample collection.
- Knowledge of electronic transfusion of blood and blood components.
- Understanding of remote release of blood processes.
- Strong analytical, communication, and clinical governance skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.

The salary scale for Grade 6005 – Haemovigilance Officer is aligned with the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales (effective 1 August 2025) .
