Regional Hospital Mullingar is recruiting a Staff Grade Medical Scientist (Microbiology) to join its laboratory service on a permanent, whole-time basis. This role plays a vital part in delivering high-quality microbiology diagnostics that directly support patient care across the hospital and region.
The post holder will perform routine, specialised, and research & development testing within a robust Quality Management framework aligned with ISO 15189:2022 standards.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform routine, specialised, and R&D microbiology testing to the highest professional standards
• Ensure laboratory tests are processed and reported within agreed quality and turnaround times
• Work in compliance with ISO 15189:2022 Medical Laboratories standards
• Maintain accurate records, documentation, and quality control procedures
• Contribute to continuous quality improvement and best practice initiatives
• Support patient safety through strict adherence to laboratory protocols
• Collaborate with laboratory colleagues and multidisciplinary clinical teams
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Eligibility for registration with the Medical Scientists Registration Board (CORU)
• Relevant qualification in Medical Science (Microbiology)
• Demonstrated knowledge of quality management systems in medical laboratories
• Experience working within ISO-accredited laboratory environments (desirable)
• Strong analytical, organisational, and communication skills
• Commitment to patient safety, quality, and continuous professional development
