The Health Service Executive (HSE) South West is seeking a dedicated Medical Scientist for a permanent full-time position in Blood Sciences at Cork University Hospital. About the Role

As a Staff Grade Medical Scientist in our Blood Sciences department, you will play a crucial role in diagnostic laboratory services, specializing in Haematology and Biochemistry testing. This permanent position offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge laboratory technology while contributing to patient care and clinical decision-making at Cork University Hospital.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform complex haematological and biochemical analyses using advanced laboratory equipment and methodologies
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of blood samples for diagnostic testing and patient monitoring
  • Maintain quality control standards and participate in external quality assurance programs for blood sciences
  • Collaborate with clinical teams to provide expert consultation on laboratory results and testing protocols
  • Supervise and mentor junior laboratory staff in haematology and biochemistry procedures
  • Participate in laboratory method validation, equipment maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures
  • Contribute to research activities and continuous improvement initiatives within the Blood Sciences department

Required Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • Primary degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, or related scientific discipline
  • Minimum 2-3 years post-qualification experience in clinical laboratory medicine, preferably in haematology and/or biochemistry
  • Current registration with the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM) or eligibility for registration
  • Demonstrated expertise in blood sciences techniques including automated haematology and chemistry analyzers
  • Strong knowledge of quality management systems and laboratory accreditation standards

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, or related specialization
  • Experience with specialized blood sciences testing including coagulation studies and advanced haematological investigations
  • Previous experience in a hospital laboratory environment within the HSE or similar healthcare system
  • Research experience or publications in laboratory medicine or blood sciences
