Mayo University Hospital is seeking a Medical Scientist, Staff Grade (Microbiology) for a permanent wholetime position. This is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic laboratory team delivering essential microbiology diagnostic services within the HSE West and North West region.
The successful candidate will demonstrate depth and breadth of microbiology laboratory experience and contribute to high-quality, patient-centred services in a busy acute hospital setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and specialised microbiology laboratory testing in accordance with approved protocols.
- Ensure accurate analysis, interpretation, and reporting of laboratory results.
- Maintain quality standards in line with laboratory accreditation requirements.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment safely and efficiently.
- Participate in quality assurance, audit, and service improvement initiatives.
- Adhere to infection prevention, health and safety, and risk management policies.
- Contribute to training and supervision of laboratory staff where required.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Be registered, or be eligible for registration, as a Medical Scientist with CORU.
- Demonstrate depth and breadth of experience relevant to a Microbiology laboratory role.
- Possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrate excellent organisational and communication abilities.
- Show commitment to quality improvement and continuous professional development.

- Salary aligned to the Medical Scientist Grade 3875 pay scale under the Department of Health Consolidated Salary Scales (1 August 2025).
