Medical Scientist Microbiology – Sligo University Hospital

Sligo University Hospital is seeking an experienced Medical Scientist (Staff Grade) in Microbiology to join its laboratory team under HSE West and North West. This specified purpose wholetime position offers an opportunity to contribute to high-quality diagnostic microbiology services supporting patient care across the region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and specialised microbiological analyses in accordance with laboratory protocols.
  • Contribute to accurate and timely reporting of microbiology results to clinical teams.
  • Maintain quality assurance standards and comply with ISO and HSE laboratory guidelines.
  • Participate in quality control, audit, and service improvement initiatives.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Support infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare professionals to optimise patient outcomes.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • BSc (Honours) in Biomedical Science or equivalent qualification recognised by CORU.
  • Registration or eligibility for registration with CORU as a Medical Scientist.
  • Demonstrated depth and breadth of experience working in Microbiology.
  • Strong knowledge of microbiological techniques, quality systems, and laboratory standards.
  • Excellent analytical, organisational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
