St. Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny is recruiting a Staff Nurse to join its Critical Care Unit on a permanent, whole-time basis. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified nurse to work in a dynamic acute care environment, delivering high-quality, evidence-based care to critically ill patients in the HSE Dublin and South East region.

About the Role

As a Staff Nurse in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) at St. Luke’s General Hospital, you will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care for patients with complex and life-threatening conditions. Working as part of a dedicated multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to the delivery of safe, compassionate, and patient-centred care in line with HSE standards and professional nursing guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct, high-quality nursing care to critically ill patients in the Critical Care Unit
  • Conduct holistic patient assessments and develop, implement, and evaluate individualised care plans
  • Monitor and respond to changes in patient condition, escalating appropriately
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments safely and accurately
  • Collaborate effectively with medical, nursing, and allied health colleagues within the multidisciplinary team
  • Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records in compliance with NMBI standards
  • Promote a culture of patient safety, dignity, and respect at all times
  • Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing professional development
  • Support and mentor student nurses and less experienced colleagues as required

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Current, valid registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) in the General division
  • Experience in or a strong interest in critical care nursing is desirable
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, acute clinical environment
  • Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and evidence-based practice

Salary

This post is remunerated on the HSE Staff Nurse (General) scale: €38,166 – €56,592 per annum (Grade 2135, 13-point scale, plus long-service increments), based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 June 2026. Placement on the scale will be in accordance with HSE pay policy and previous relevant experience.

St. Luke’s General Hospital is the acute general hospital serving County Kilkenny and the surrounding area. It provides a broad range of inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services and operates within the HSE Dublin and South East health region. The Critical Care Unit is a key component of the hospital’s acute services, providing intensive monitoring and treatment for the most seriously ill patients.
