Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise, a leading Model 3 hospital serving the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group since 1936, is seeking a dedicated Staff Nurse for our Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) in Portlaoise, County Laois. This is a permanent, full-time position offering the opportunity to provide specialized care to our most vulnerable patients in a supportive, expert healthcare environment.
About the Role
As a Staff Nurse in our Special Care Baby Unit, you will provide specialized nursing care to premature and sick newborn infants requiring intensive medical support. Working within our expert multidisciplinary team, you’ll deliver evidence-based neonatal care while supporting families during critical moments in their baby’s development. This role reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager and operates within our 24-hour specialized care environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct specialized nursing care to premature and critically ill newborn infants in the SCBU environment
- Monitor and assess neonatal patients using specialized equipment including ventilators, incubators, and cardiac monitors
- Administer medications and treatments specific to neonatal care protocols and evidence-based practices
- Support and educate families during their baby’s care journey, providing emotional support and practical guidance
- Collaborate with pediatricians, advanced neonatal nurse practitioners, and multidisciplinary team members
- Maintain accurate patient documentation and participate in daily ward rounds and care planning
- Ensure infection prevention protocols are strictly followed to protect vulnerable neonatal patients
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Current registration with NMBI (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland)
- Bachelor’s degree in General Nursing or equivalent qualification
- Minimum 1-2 years post-qualification nursing experience, preferably in acute care setting
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills in high-pressure environments
- Excellent communication skills for working with families during stressful situations
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in neonatal care, pediatrics, or specialized units (SCBU/NICU)
- Additional certification in neonatal life support or specialized neonatal care
- Experience with specialized neonatal equipment and monitoring systems
- Continuing professional development in evidence-based neonatal nursing practices
