Job Overview

The Temporary Consultant Gastroenterologist and General Physician will provide specialist gastroenterology services alongside general internal medicine responsibilities at University Hospital Waterford. The postholder will play a key leadership role in patient care, clinical governance, teaching, and service improvement within the hospital.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Consultant seeking a defined-term role within a progressive and well-established acute hospital setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive gastroenterology and general medical services to inpatients and outpatients.
  • Deliver high-quality endoscopy and specialist gastroenterology procedures.
  • Participate in the on-call rota and acute medical take as required.
  • Lead and support multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions.
  • Supervise and mentor NCHDs and other clinical staff.
  • Contribute to clinical audit, research, and service development initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with HSE policies, clinical governance standards, and quality frameworks.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Registration as a Specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland (Gastroenterology and/or General Internal Medicine).
  • Extensive experience in gastroenterology and general medicine at Consultant level.
  • Demonstrated expertise in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Commitment to teaching, training, and continuous professional development.
  • Eligibility to work in Ireland.
