Key Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-level microbiology services including clinical advice, diagnostics, and infection management.
  • Lead and support infection prevention and control initiatives across the hospital.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary clinical teams to optimise antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Contribute to laboratory quality assurance, governance, and accreditation standards.
  • Participate in service planning, clinical audit, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Supervise and mentor NCHDs and laboratory staff.
  • Engage in on-call and out-of-hours consultant rotas as required.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Full registration on the Specialist Division of the Medical Council of Ireland in Microbiology or eligibility for same.
  • Demonstrated consultant-level experience in clinical microbiology.
  • Proven leadership in infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Strong communication and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
  • Commitment to clinical governance and service improvement.
  • Eligibility to work in Ireland.

Salary, Benefits & Working Hours

Salary is aligned with the HSE Consultant Microbiologist (Grade 1856) scale under the Department of Health Consolidated Salary Scales (1 August 2025 revision) . Final remuneration will be determined in line with public sector pay policy and consultant contract terms.
