Marine Accident Investigator – Seafarers – MAIU – Dublin | Department of Transport

The Department of Transport is establishing the Marine Accident Investigation Unit (MAIU), Ireland’s new independent marine safety investigation authority. We are seeking experienced maritime professionals to join our team as Marine Accident Investigators specializing in seafarer investigations in Dublin.

About the Role

As a Marine Accident Investigator (Seafarers) with the MAIU, you will conduct comprehensive investigations into marine accidents involving Irish vessels worldwide and foreign vessels in Irish territorial waters. This permanent civil service position offers the opportunity to enhance maritime safety through professional accident investigation and contribute to Ireland’s marine safety framework.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough marine accident investigations involving seafarers and vessel operations under the guidance of the Chief Investigator
  • Assist in planning and executing the annual work programme for marine accident investigations
  • Develop and review investigation methods, procedures, and protocols for seafarer-related incidents
  • Investigate marine casualties on Irish vessels operating globally and foreign vessels in Irish waters
  • Prepare detailed investigation reports with findings and safety recommendations
  • Collaborate with international maritime investigation bodies and regulatory authorities
  • Support the transition from the Marine Casualty Investigation Board (MCIB) to the new MAIU structure

Required Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • Extensive seafaring experience with senior maritime qualifications (Master Mariner or Chief Engineer Certificate preferred)
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in commercial marine operations or maritime safety
  • Strong knowledge of international maritime regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW)
  • Excellent analytical and investigation skills with attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for report writing and stakeholder engagement

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in marine accident investigation or maritime safety assessment
  • Knowledge of investigation techniques and accident analysis methodologies
  • Familiarity with Irish and international maritime law
  • Additional qualifications in safety management or accident investigation
  • Experience working with regulatory bodies or international maritime organizations
