Cork University Hospital, part of the HSE South West region, is seeking an experienced and dedicated Clinical Nurse Manager 2 to lead our Theatre Clinical Skills Facilitation team in Cork. About the Role
As Clinical Nurse Manager 2 (Theatre Clinical Skills Facilitator), you will provide strategic leadership in clinical skills development within the Theatre department at Cork University Hospital. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Nursing, you will be responsible for coordinating, delivering, and evaluating education programmes that ensure excellence in perioperative nursing practice. This role combines clinical expertise with educational leadership to support staff development and maintain the highest standards of patient care in the operating theatre environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and implementation of clinical skills training programmes for theatre nursing staff, ensuring compliance with evidence-based practice and national standards
- Coordinate orientation, induction, and ongoing professional development for nursing staff working in perioperative environments, including scrub, anaesthetic, and recovery areas
- Assess clinical competency and learning needs of theatre staff, designing targeted interventions to address skill gaps and enhance performance in the operating theatre setting
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to maintain safe, effective surgical services while promoting a culture of continuous learning and quality improvement
- Manage resources effectively, including scheduling educational activities, maintaining training equipment, and optimizing the clinical skills facilitation service within budget parameters
- Provide clinical supervision and mentorship to theatre nursing staff at all grades, supporting career progression and specialty-specific skill development
- Monitor and evaluate educational outcomes through regular audits, feedback mechanisms, and quality metrics, implementing improvements based on findings and emerging perioperative best practices
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements:
- Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) as a Registered General Nurse
- Minimum 5 years post-registration experience, with substantial recent experience in theatre/perioperative nursing
- Post-registration qualification in Theatre Nursing or Perioperative Practice
- Educational qualification (minimum NFQ Level 8) in education, clinical skills facilitation, or related field
- Demonstrated leadership and management experience in a clinical setting
- Evidence of continuing professional development relevant to theatre nursing and clinical education
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Education, or related discipline
- Experience in clinical skills facilitation or nurse education roles
- Advanced perioperative nursing competencies across multiple surgical specialties
- Knowledge of quality improvement methodologies and clinical audit processes
- Familiarity with HSE policies, procedures, and governance structures in perioperative services
