Mayo University Hospital, part of the HSE West and North West Health Region, is seeking a Staff Grade Medical Scientist to join the Haematology and Blood Transfusion Departments. This is an exciting opportunity for qualified scientists to work in a modern, accredited laboratory that delivers high-quality diagnostic and transfusion services to patients across County Mayo.

About the Role

As a Medical Scientist (Staff Grade), you will contribute to the delivery of a safe and effective diagnostic service in Haematology and Blood Transfusion. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will play a key role in maintaining quality standards, supporting clinical care, and developing laboratory practices in line with ISO and HSE guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform analytical, interpretive, and technical duties in Haematology and Blood Transfusion.
  • Participate in internal quality assurance and continuous improvement programmes.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory accreditation standards (e.g., INAB, ISO 15189).
  • Support validation and verification of new instruments and methodologies.
  • Provide training and supervision for junior staff and students.
  • Collaborate closely with clinical colleagues to ensure timely, accurate reporting of results.
  • Participate in on-call and weekend rotas as required.

Required Qualifications

Essential

  • Hold a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biomedical Science or an equivalent qualification accredited by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM).
  • Be eligible for CORU registration as a Medical Scientist (or provide proof of application).
  • Demonstrate a depth and breadth of experience in Haematology and/or Blood Transfusion relevant to this post.

Preferred

  • Experience working in an accredited hospital laboratory under ISO 15189 standards.
  • Familiarity with Haemovigilance systems and LIMS software.
  • Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

    €40,298 – €66,562 per annum (Medical Scientist, Staff Grade, PPC Scale – per HSE Circular 6/2025).
