The Health Service Executive (HSE) is seeking a Senior Medical Scientist (POCT) to join the laboratory team at Portiuncula University Hospital, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway. This permanent, whole-time role focuses on delivering and overseeing high-quality point-of-care testing (POCT) services in line with ISO 15189 standards. An excellent opportunity for an experienced medical scientist to advance their career within the HSE West and North West region.
Key Responsibilities
• Oversee, manage, and support the delivery of POCT services across the hospital.
• Ensure compliance with ISO 15189 requirements and maintain high-quality laboratory standards.
• Assist with the implementation, monitoring, and audit of POCT procedures and policies.
• Provide expert scientific guidance to clinical teams and support best practice.
• Lead POCT training, competency assessments, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
• Support the Laboratory Manager and multidisciplinary teams with service development.
• Participate in troubleshooting and performance evaluation of POCT equipment and systems.
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Science or equivalent qualification recognised by CORU.
• Eligibility for registration as a Medical Scientist with CORU.
• Significant post-qualification experience in a clinical laboratory environment.
• Experience with POCT operations, quality systems, and accreditation processes.
• Strong knowledge of ISO 15189 compliance requirements.
• Excellent communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a busy clinical setting.
