The Health Service Executive (HSE) is seeking a Senior Medical Scientist in Microbiology (Reference P3203) to join the laboratory team at Portiuncula University Hospital, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway. This permanent wholetime role offers an opportunity to contribute to high-quality diagnostic microbiology services within the HSE West and North West region.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform and supervise complex microbiology investigations in accordance with laboratory standards
• Ensure accuracy, quality control, and adherence to regulatory and clinical guidelines
• Provide scientific leadership and support to junior staff within the microbiology department
• Collaborate with clinicians, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary teams to support patient care
• Participate in audit, training, method development, and continuous quality improvement
• Maintain compliance with HSE policies, laboratory accreditation, and infection prevention standards
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Hold the appropriate degree in Medical Science or equivalent recognised qualification
• Demonstrate depth and breadth of post-qualification experience in a hospital microbiology laboratory
• Strong analytical, organisational, and communication skills
• Proven ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Commitment to CPD, quality assurance, and best practice in microbiology services
