The Health Service Executive (HSE) is recruiting a Consultant Psychiatrist in the Psychiatry of Old Age to join the Mental Health Services in Mayo. This permanent, wholetime post (37 hours per week) offers an opportunity to lead specialist care for older adults across the HSE West and North West region. The successful applicant will contribute to high-quality, person-centred mental health services in a dynamic clinical environment.
Table of Contents
Key Responsibilities
• Provide comprehensive psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for older adult service users
• Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary team input across community and acute settings
• Deliver evidence-based interventions and contribute to care planning and review
• Provide clinical leadership, including supervision of NCHDs and other clinical staff
• Liaise with primary care, geriatric medicine, voluntary services, and family/carers
• Participate in governance structures and quality improvement initiatives
• Participate in the on-call rota as required
• Ensure compliance with HSE policies, clinical guidelines, and statutory obligations
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist in Psychiatry of Old Age with the Irish Medical Council
• Extensive clinical expertise in assessment and management of mental health disorders in older adults
• Strong leadership, communication, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills
• Commitment to continuous professional development and service improvement
• Proven ability to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care
• Experience in teaching, supervision, and clinical governance is desirable
Salary, Benefits & Working Hours
Salary: Consultant salaries follow the HSE Consolidated Pay Scales (1 August 2025).
For Consultant Psychiatrists, indicative salary range (Type B Contract – Category I/II) is approximately:
€237,868 – €257,137 per annum
Hours: 37 hours per week (wholetime)
Contract: Permanent, public sector Consultant contract
