Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe is seeking a highly experienced Consultant Histopathologist (126Y) to join its pathology department on a permanent, wholetime basis. This senior role offers the opportunity to shape diagnostic services within HSE West & North West, supporting high-quality patient outcomes across the region. The post is 37 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities
• Deliver high-quality histopathology and cytopathology services
• Lead diagnostic decision-making across multidisciplinary clinical teams
• Provide expert consultation and second opinions for complex cases
• Contribute to clinical governance, quality assurance, and audit
• Participate in rota commitments and on-call services where required
• Support continuous improvement of laboratory practices and workflows
• Engage in teaching, training, and professional development of junior medical staff
• Collaborate with hospital leadership on service planning and development initiatives
Required Skills & Qualifications
• Registered (or eligible for registration) on the Specialist Division – Histopathology of the IMC
• Completed specialist training in Histopathology (or equivalent recognised training)
• Proven experience providing consultant-level diagnostic services
• Strong analytical and reporting skills with meticulous attention to accuracy
• Ability to lead and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams
• Commitment to ongoing professional development, research, and teaching
• Excellent communication and clinical judgement
Salary, Benefits & Working Hours
Consultant Histopathologist Salary Scale (126Y), effective 1 August 2025:
• €203,358 – €215,602 – €234,636 – €247,941 – €256,678 – €270,178 – LSIs: €280,086 / €282,887 / €288,625 / €291,511 / €297,166 / €300,138
• Contract type: Permanent Wholetime
• Hours: 37 hours per week
