Galway University Hospitals are seeking a highly experienced Senior Medical Scientist in Microbiology for a permanent wholetime position within HSE West and North West. This is a key leadership opportunity for an experienced professional with strong laboratory governance and LIMS expertise to contribute to high-quality diagnostic services.
This is an internal campaign and is open only to employees of the HSE, TUSLA, Section 38 agencies, or statutory health agencies in line with WRC Agreement 161867.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead and support the delivery of a comprehensive Microbiology laboratory service
• Ensure compliance with ISO 15189 standards within an accredited laboratory environment
• Manage and oversee the APEX Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
• Provide specialist scientific expertise within Microbiology
• Support quality assurance, audit and accreditation processes
• Supervise and mentor laboratory staff
• Contribute to service planning, development and continuous improvement initiatives
Required Skills & Qualifications
• CORU registration as a Medical Scientist (or eligibility for registration)
• Significant post qualification experience in a hospital Microbiology Laboratory
• Evidence of working in a Microbiology Laboratory accredited to ISO 15189 (essential)
• Demonstrated experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS)
• Proven experience managing and running APEX LIMS systems in Microbiology
• Strong leadership, organisational and communication skills
Salary, Benefits & Working Hours
Salary is aligned to the HSE Medical Scientist – Senior Grade (Code 3877) consolidated pay scale effective 1 August 2025 in accordance with Department of Health Circular 6/2025 .
Permanent Wholetime contract.
