Job Overview
The Clinical Midwife Manager 2 Shift Leader role at Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise is a key leadership position within the maternity service. This permanent HSE opportunity offers experienced midwives the chance to lead, coordinate and enhance clinical care delivery within a dynamic hospital environment.
The Clinical Midwife Manager 2 Shift Leader will play a pivotal role in service planning, resource management, quality assurance and professional leadership across the clinical area.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide clinical and professional leadership within the midwifery team.
- Coordinate and manage service activity and patient flow within the clinical area.
- Lead quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Oversee resource allocation and workforce planning during shifts.
- Support staff development, supervision and performance management.
- Promote evidence-based midwifery practice and clinical governance standards.
- Facilitate effective communication across multidisciplinary teams.
- Ensure compliance with HSE policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Registered Midwife with active registration on the Midwives Division of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
- Minimum relevant post-registration experience in midwifery practice.
- Demonstrated leadership and management experience within a clinical setting.
- Strong organisational, communication and decision-making skills.
- Experience in quality improvement and service development initiatives.
- Commitment to professional development and evidence-based practice.
- Eligibility to work within the public health sector under current HSE policies.
Salary, Benefits & Working Hours
- Salary scale: €62,078 – €78,443 (LSI) per annum (February 2026 consolidated scale).

Location & Employer Information
This position is based at Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise, County Laois, within the HSE Dublin and Midlands Health Region. The hospital provides acute maternity and general services to the surrounding population and operates as part of the wider public health system.
This role is open only to employees of the HSE, TUSLA, Section 38 agencies, or statutory health agencies in accordance with WRC Agreement 161867.
