The Director of Midwifery 1 role within HSE West and North West offers a senior leadership opportunity to shape maternity services across a large regional healthcare network. This Director of Midwifery job in the West and North West region is ideal for an experienced leader ready to influence strategy, governance, and service delivery across multiple sites, including regular engagement at Galway University Hospital.

Job Overview

As Director of Midwifery 1, you will lead the strategic development and operational management of midwifery services across the HSE West and North West Regional Health Area. You will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to enhance maternity care delivery and support integrated service models across counties including Galway, Mayo, Sligo, and Donegal.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership for midwifery services across the region
  • Drive quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical governance initiatives
  • Lead workforce planning, development, and performance management for midwifery teams
  • Collaborate with the Women’s and Children’s Network of Care to deliver integrated services
  • Ensure compliance with national policies, standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Support service innovation and transformation in maternity care delivery
  • Engage with stakeholders across multiple hospital and community settings
  • Oversee resource management and service efficiency across the region

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Registered Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
  • Significant senior leadership experience in midwifery or maternity services
  • Proven ability in strategic planning and service development
  • Strong understanding of clinical governance and healthcare quality frameworks
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Experience managing large, multidisciplinary teams across multiple sites
  • Full eligibility criteria available in the official job specification

Salary, Benefits & Working Hours

Salary Scale: €95,664 to €111,623 per annum (incremental scale)

This is a Permanent Wholetime position offering strong public sector benefits, including pension, annual leave, and professional development opportunities. The role requires frequent travel across the region and attendance at Galway University Hospital 2–3 days per week.
