Mayo University Hospital is recruiting a Staff Nurse to join its Emergency and Acute Floor, incorporating the Emergency Department (ED), Escalation, and the Acute Medical Assessment Unit (AMAU). This is a permanent, whole-time post within HSE West and North West, giving an experienced nurse the opportunity to deliver high-quality, front-door care at one of County Mayo’s busiest acute services.
About the Role
As a Staff Nurse on the Emergency and Acute Floor, you will play a central role in the hospital’s unscheduled care pathway, working across the ED, AMAU and escalation areas to assess, plan and deliver safe, evidence-based nursing care. It is a fast-paced environment where clinical judgement, strong communication and effective teamwork directly shape patient outcomes and experience.
- Deliver and evaluate individualised, evidence-based nursing care to patients presenting to the ED, AMAU and escalation areas.
- Assess, plan, implement and review patient care in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.
- Support safe and effective patient flow, particularly during periods of escalation and high demand.
- Maintain accurate, timely nursing documentation in line with NMBI standards and hospital policy.
- Contribute to a culture of patient safety, infection prevention and continuous quality improvement.
Remuneration
€37,788 – €54,412 per annum (HSE Staff Nurse scale, 12-point incremental scale, with a long-service increment of €56,032), based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 February 2026.
Requirements
- Be registered in the General division of the live Register of Nurses maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), or be eligible to register.
- Demonstrate depth and breadth of recent post-registration experience in an acute hospital setting within the last 24 months.
- Possess the clinical, communication and teamworking skills needed to thrive in a busy emergency and acute environment.

Mayo University Hospital, based in Castlebar, is one of the principal acute hospitals serving County Mayo and the wider HSE West and North West region, which spans Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo and Galway.
