St. Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny is recruiting a qualified Plumber Fitter to join its Technical Services Department on a permanent, wholetime basis. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled tradesperson to contribute to the safe and efficient operation of a busy acute general hospital, playing a direct role in maintaining the building infrastructure that supports frontline patient care across the HSE Dublin and South East region.
Role Overview
As a Plumber Fitter at St. Luke’s General Hospital, you will be responsible for the maintenance, installation, and repair of plumbing and pipework systems across the hospital estate. Working as part of the Technical Services team, you will help ensure compliance with healthcare infrastructure standards and contribute to a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventive maintenance and reactive repair work on plumbing, pipework, and associated systems throughout the hospital.
- Install, commission, and maintain water services, drainage systems, sanitary fittings, and related equipment.
- Ensure compliance with healthcare infection prevention standards, including Legionella control and water safety requirements.
- Respond promptly to emergency breakdowns and urgent maintenance requests to minimise disruption to clinical services.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and complete all required documentation in line with hospital procedures.
- Work safely in accordance with health and safety legislation and HSE policies, including permit-to-work systems.
- Liaise with other Technical Services staff, contractors, and clinical departments as required.
- Participate in on-call and out-of-hours rota arrangements where applicable.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A recognised apprenticeship qualification in Plumbing or equivalent trade qualification (FETAC/QQI Level 6 or equivalent).
- Demonstrated experience working as a qualified Plumber in a commercial, industrial, or healthcare environment.
- Knowledge of relevant plumbing regulations, standards, and health and safety requirements.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to maintain accurate records.
- Full driving licence may be required depending on site requirements.
Salary
€42,486 – €48,534 per annum (HSE Plumber scale 5134, 11-point scale, plus Long Service Increments where applicable). Salary is based on the HSE Consolidated Pay Scales effective 1 June 2026.

St. Luke’s General Hospital is the principal acute hospital serving County Kilkenny and the surrounding area, providing a wide range of medical, surgical, and emergency services. The hospital is situated in Kilkenny city and forms a key part of the HSE Dublin and South East regional network. This role is based on-site at St. Luke’s, working within the hospital’s Technical Services Department.
