Galway University Hospitals is recruiting a Midwifery Clinical Placement Co-ordinator (Comhordaitheoir na Socrúchán Cliniciúil Cnáimhseachas) to support the development and coordination of clinical placements for student midwives across its maternity services. This is a specialist practice-facing role at the heart of midwifery education and workforce development in one of Ireland’s busiest regional hospital groups.
Role Overview
The Midwifery Clinical Placement Co-ordinator (MCPC) plays a central role in shaping the quality of clinical learning experiences for student midwives. Working closely with the multidisciplinary team, the MCPC ensures that placements across antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal settings are planned, supported, and evaluated to the highest standards. The post holder will act as a key liaison between Galway University Hospitals and affiliated higher education institutions, fostering a culture of reflective practice and continuous professional development.
Key Responsibilities
- Co-ordinate and manage clinical placement allocations for student midwives across all relevant maternity care settings.
- Support and develop preceptors and clinical mentors within the midwifery team to ensure effective student supervision.
- Act as a resource and point of contact for student midwives throughout their placements.
- Monitor student progress and placement quality, identifying and addressing any learning or practice concerns in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with the Midwifery Practice Development team, higher education institutions, and NMBI to meet regulatory and educational requirements.
- Contribute to simulation-based learning and skills development programmes, including CTG interpretation and obstetric emergency preparedness.
- Maintain accurate placement records and prepare reports as required.
- Participate in audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives relevant to midwifery education.
Requirements
Candidates must be registered midwives with current NMBI registration and must be able to demonstrate the following:
- Substantial experience in antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care.
- Competence in CTG interpretation and management of obstetric emergencies, whether gained through clinical practice or simulation.
- Experience as a registered or approved preceptor for midwifery students in antenatal, intrapartum, or postnatal settings.
Salary
€62,699 – €79,227 per annum (HSE Nursing/Midwifery Clinical Placement Co-ordinator scale, Grade 241Y, 11-point scale, plus long-service increments where applicable). Salary is based on the HSE Consolidated Pay Scales effective 1 June 2026.
Location
Galway University Hospitals, Galway. GUH is the principal acute hospital serving the West of Ireland and a major academic teaching hospital, providing a full range of maternity and women’s health services. The post is based on-site and works across the hospital’s midwifery services.
