University Hospital Kerry is recruiting a Clinical Nurse Manager 2 (CNM2) to provide clinical and operational leadership across its Emergency Department and Acute Floor. This is a permanent, whole-time post offering a senior nursing management opportunity in one of the HSE South West region’s key acute hospital sites.

About the Role

The CNM2 will hold delegated responsibility for the day-to-day management of nursing services across the Emergency Department and Acute Floor at University Hospital Kerry. The post holder will work within a multidisciplinary team environment, maintaining clinical standards, managing staff, and supporting the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care in a busy acute hospital setting. The role reports to the Director/Assistant Director of Nursing and contributes directly to the operational and strategic objectives of the nursing division.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical and managerial leadership to nursing and healthcare assistant staff across the Emergency Department and Acute Floor
  • Manage rostering, staffing levels, and skill mix to ensure safe and effective patient care at all times
  • Oversee patient flow, bed management, and escalation processes in line with hospital protocols
  • Monitor and maintain compliance with infection prevention and control standards, patient safety frameworks, and HIQA regulations
  • Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement initiatives, and the implementation of evidence-based nursing practice
  • Support the professional development of nursing staff, including mentorship, appraisal, and facilitation of learning
  • Liaise with the multidisciplinary team, medical staff, and other departments to coordinate patient care pathways
  • Contribute to the development and review of nursing policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Act as a resource and clinical expert to staff, patients, and families in the Emergency Department and Acute Floor setting
  • Participate in on-call and out-of-hours management cover as required

Requirements

  • Be registered, or be eligible for registration, in the General division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland)
  • Have a minimum of five years’ post-registration nursing experience in the acute hospital setting, of which a minimum of two years must be in the area of Emergency or Acute nursing
  • Have the clinical, managerial, and administrative capacity to plan, manage, and coordinate nursing services at CNM2 level
  • Evidence of relevant continuous professional development
  • Management or leadership qualification desirable

Salary

€62,699 – €74,123 per annum (HSE Clinical Nurse Manager 2 (General) scale, 11-point scale, plus Long Service Increments of €76,921 and €79,227 where applicable). Salary is based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 June 2026, per DoH Circular 2/2026.

University Hospital Kerry (UHK) is the principal acute hospital serving County Kerry and the wider HSE South West region. Located in Tralee, UHK provides a full range of acute medical, surgical, and emergency services and is a key site within the South/South West Hospital Group. The Emergency Department and Acute Floor operate at the centre of the hospital’s acute patient pathway.
