The HSE Dublin and Midlands region is recruiting a Staff Grade Medical Scientist specialising in Clinical Chemistry (also known as Eolaí Leighis Grád Foirne — Ceimic Chliniciúil). This is a permanent, wholetime appointment from which a panel will be formed to fill current and future vacancies at hospitals across the Midlands and surrounding areas.
About the Role
As a Staff Grade Medical Scientist in Clinical Chemistry, you will contribute to the delivery of high-quality laboratory diagnostic services within a busy, multi-site regional health network. The role requires demonstrated depth and breadth of post-qualification experience in the field of Clinical Chemistry and offers the opportunity to practise within a well-resourced, professionally supported environment across some of the Midlands’ most significant acute hospitals.
A panel will be formed from this competition and may be used to fill current and future permanent and specified purpose vacancies — both full-time and part-time — across the HSE Dublin and Midlands region.
Key Responsibilities

- Perform a range of clinical chemistry analyses and laboratory procedures to the highest standards of quality and patient safety.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, carrying out quality control procedures and troubleshooting as required.
- Ensure compliance with relevant national and international accreditation standards (e.g. ISO 15189, INAB).
- Contribute to the validation and introduction of new assays and analytical methods.
- Participate in continuing professional development and maintain registration with CORU as a Medical Scientist.
- Support the safe and effective delivery of out-of-hours and on-call laboratory services as required.
- Collaborate with clinical teams, laboratory colleagues, and external stakeholders to deliver timely, accurate diagnostic results.
- Maintain accurate records and adhere to health and safety protocols within the laboratory environment.
Requirements and Qualifications

- Hold a recognised qualification in Medical Science (BSc or equivalent) that is registerable with CORU.
- Be registered, or be eligible for registration, with CORU as a Medical Scientist.
- Demonstrate depth and breadth of post-qualification experience in Clinical Chemistry — this is a specific requirement for this campaign.
- Have the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in a busy acute hospital setting.
- Demonstrate commitment to quality, patient safety, and continuing professional development.
Salary
€45,279 – €73,721 per annum (HSE Medical Scientist scale, Grade 3875, 16-point scale), plus Long Service Increments (LSI: €75,148) where applicable. Based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 June 2026 (DoH Circular 2/2026). Placement on the scale is in accordance with HSE incremental credit policy.
Location
This competition covers the HSE Dublin and Midlands region (Longford, Westmeath, Offaly, Laois, Kildare, and parts of Dublin South and Wicklow). Panel vacancies may arise at any of the following locations:
- Midlands Regional Hospital, Tullamore, Co. Offaly
- Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise, Co. Laois
- Naas General Hospital, Co. Kildare
- Regional Hospital Mullingar, Co. Westmeath
