St. John of God Community Services is seeking an experienced Senior Psychologist (Clinical or Counselling) to join the Mental Health of Intellectual Disability (MHID) Service based at Cluain Mhuire Service, Sandyford Business Park, Dublin 18. This permanent full-time opportunity offers the chance to contribute to a specialist multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality community mental health services for adults with intellectual disabilities across HSE Dublin and South East.

Role Overview

The successful candidate will become part of a specialist community-based MHID service supporting adults with moderate to profound intellectual disabilities who present with moderate to severe mental health conditions. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will provide specialist psychological assessment, intervention and consultation while contributing to the continued development of this nationally supported service improvement programme.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist psychological assessment and evidence-based therapeutic interventions.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary Mental Health of Intellectual Disability team.
  • Support adults presenting with complex mental health and intellectual disability needs.
  • Deliver individual and group psychological interventions where appropriate.
  • Contribute to service development and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provide consultation, counselling and advocacy in line with best practice.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and comply with professional standards.

Requirements

  • Recognised university degree or diploma (QQI Level 8 equivalent) accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland with First Class Honours or Second Class Honours Grade 1.
  • Recognised postgraduate professional qualification in Clinical or Counselling Psychology accredited by the Psychological Society of Ireland.
  • Qualifications obtained outside Ireland must be validated by the Department of Health.
  • Minimum of five years’ satisfactory postgraduate professional psychology experience.
  • At least one year’s post-qualification experience in CAMHS, Adult Mental Health Services or Intellectual Disability Services carrying out psychological assessments and therapy.
  • Knowledge of intellectual disability, mental health, neurodevelopmental disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, emotional dysregulation and substance misuse.
  • Experience facilitating group work and working within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent counselling, advocacy and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Cluain Mhuire Service is desirable.

Salary

€100,483 – €110,963 per annum (HSE-aligned Senior Clinical Psychologist Grade 367Y salary scale, 8-point scale, plus Long Service Increments where applicable). As a Section 38 organisation, St. John of God Community Services applies HSE-aligned salary scales. Salary based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 June 2026.

Location

This position is based at Sandyford Business Park, Dublin 18, within the Cluain Mhuire Service. The MHID team provides specialist community mental health services across Community Healthcare Networks 1–6 within HSE Dublin and South East, supporting a catchment population of approximately 300,000.
