🌐 Overview
Portiuncula University Hospital invites applications for a Grade V Clinical Coder to join the HIPE (Hospital In‑Patient Enquiry) team. This permanent position plays a vital role in capturing, coding, and entering inpatient and day-case clinical data using ICD‑10‑AM, supporting patient-centred care, ABF (Activity-Based Funding), and data integrity.
✅ Key Responsibilities
- Extract diagnostic/procedural information from inpatient records and apply ICD‑10‑AM in line with Irish and Australian coding standards
- Ensure precise and prompt data entry into the HIPE portal
- Validate own submissions using tools like CHECKER & PICQ
- Identify information gaps and collaborate with clinical teams
- Maintain data confidentiality and meet HPO (Healthcare Pricing Office) export deadlines
- Assist with training and mentoring new coders
- Engage with IT and HPO for system support and updates
🎓 Essential Requirements
- Eligibility: HSE, TUSLA, Section 38 agencies staff (current employees)
- Qualifications (minimum ONE of):
- Experience as Clerical Officer in HSE/TUSLA/Section 38 agencies
- Five Leaving Certificate passes (including Maths + English/Irish) with at least Grade C in three Higher Level subjects
- Level 6 QQI qualification or equivalent abroad
- Desirable Skills:
- Proficient in medical terminology and IPMS (Integrated Patient Management System)
- Strong administrative experience in a hospital environment
- Excellent communication, analytical, and teamworking skills
💰 Salary & Benefits
- Starting salary: €51,206, rising incrementally to €61,253 (LSI on experience)
- Pensionable under HSE Public Service Scheme
- Standard working week: 35 hours, with flexibility between 8 am–8 pm, Monday–Friday (per HSE circular 003/2009)
