Join HSE West and North West at Galway University Hospitals as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (Candidate) in Radiation Oncology. This is a key opportunity for an experienced nurse with a strong background in oncology or acute services to advance into a specialist leadership role. The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of evidence-based, patient-centred cancer care across the HSE’s West and North West region.
About the Role
As a Candidate Advanced Nurse Practitioner (cANP), you will develop clinical expertise under the mentorship of a designated Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) while completing the required educational and practice competencies. You’ll work closely with multidisciplinary teams in Radiation Oncology, supporting the management of patients undergoing treatment at Galway University Hospitals, a major centre of excellence in cancer care.
This role is permanent and whole-time, offering career progression within the HSE framework and structured development toward full ANP registration.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver safe, effective, and person-centred care in the Radiation Oncology service.
- Collaborate with consultants, radiographers, and multidisciplinary teams to enhance treatment pathways.
- Undertake advanced assessments, planning, and evaluation of patient care.
- Develop autonomous clinical decision-making skills under ANP supervision.
- Participate in clinical audits, service improvement, and research initiatives.
- Support patient education and promote best practices in oncology nursing.
- Contribute to the continued development of nursing practice in line with national HSE standards.
Required Qualifications
Essential
- Registered in the General Division of the NMBI Register.
- Demonstrated depth and breadth of post-registration experience in Radiation Oncology or a closely related area.
- Eligible for or currently undertaking an MSc in Advanced Practice (or equivalent).
- Be a registered nurse prescriber, or agree to undertake the Nurse Prescribing of Medicinal Products Certificate within an agreed timeframe.
- Agree to undertake the Nurse Prescribing of Ionising Radiation Certificate within an agreed timeframe.
Desirable
- Experience working in tertiary oncology or radiotherapy settings.
- Strong skills in clinical research, leadership, and education.
- Commitment to professional development and continuous improvement.
