Role Overview
As Assistant Director of Nursing at Galway University Hospitals, the successful candidate will provide senior nursing and midwifery leadership across the acute hospital site, supporting the Director of Nursing in the operational, clinical governance, and workforce management functions of the hospital. The role requires demonstrable depth and breadth of management experience in an acute hospital setting, with participation in an operational roster that includes weekend and unsocial / out-of-hours working as required.

- Deputise for and support the Director of Nursing in the strategic and operational management of nursing and midwifery services across the hospital site
- Provide visible, senior nursing leadership across designated clinical directorates, ensuring high standards of patient safety and quality of care
- Participate in an operational management roster, including weekend and out-of-hours cover as part of the senior nursing management team
- Lead on workforce planning, performance management, and professional development of nursing and midwifery staff within the relevant service areas
- Contribute to clinical governance, risk management, and compliance with regulatory and HSE standards
- Represent nursing and midwifery interests at relevant hospital management and governance forums
Requirements and Qualifications

- Be a Registered Nurse on the relevant division of the live register maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
- Have at least five years’ post-registration experience, including significant experience at a senior management/leadership level in an acute hospital setting
- Demonstrate depth and breadth of management experience relevant to an acute hospital environment
- Possess a relevant management or leadership qualification, or be working towards one
- Demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development
- Be available to work weekends and unsocial / out-of-hours duties as part of an operational roster
Salary
€72,843 – €89,894 per annum (HSE Assistant Director of Nursing, Band 1 Hospitals scale, 9-point scale), based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 June 2026. As this is a part-time post, salary will be paid pro-rata based on the hours worked.
