Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital is seeking applications for the position of Assistant Director of Nursing (Out of Hours). This senior nursing leadership role is responsible for overseeing hospital operations outside normal working hours, ensuring the safe and effective delivery of patient care while providing operational leadership, clinical expertise, and support to multidisciplinary teams. This opportunity is open to both HSE and non-HSE applicants.
Role Overview
The Assistant Director of Nursing (Out of Hours) will manage operational activity across the hospital during evenings, nights, weekends, and other out-of-hours periods. The successful candidate will have responsibility for bed management, responding to complex clinical and non-clinical operational issues, supporting staff across all grades, and contributing to high-quality patient care.
The role also provides leadership in clinical governance, quality improvement, nursing practice development, and the implementation of local and national nursing strategies. The post holder will rotate across night duty, daytime, and weekend shifts as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide operational leadership throughout out-of-hours periods.
- Manage hospital bed capacity and patient flow.
- Respond to complex clinical, operational, and non-clinical situations.
- Support and advise nursing and multidisciplinary staff across all grades.
- Lead and contribute to quality assurance and continuous service improvement initiatives.
- Develop, monitor, and evaluate key performance indicators and outcome measures.
- Promote evidence-based nursing practice across designated service areas.
- Support service developments that enhance patient-centred care.
- Provide leadership in clinical governance and nursing service delivery.
- Contribute to the implementation of the Louth Hospitals, Dublin North East Regional Strategy, and national nursing strategy.
Requirements / Qualifications
- Eligibility to work within the Health Service Executive.
- Relevant nursing registration and qualifications appropriate to an Assistant Director of Nursing position.
- Strong leadership, operational management, and decision-making skills.
- Experience managing complex clinical and operational situations.
- Commitment to clinical governance, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice.
- Ability to work rotating day, night, and weekend shifts.
Salary
€72,843 – €85,485 per annum (HSE Assistant Director of Nursing (Band 1 Hospitals), Grade Code 2910, 9-point scale, plus Long Service Increment where applicable), based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 June 2026.
