The HSE South West (Kerry and Cork) is inviting applications for the post of Catering Assistant at Mallow General Hospital, Cork. This is a permanent, wholetime position open to both HSE and non-HSE applicants.

Mallow General Hospital is part of the HSE South West health region, providing a range of acute and community-linked services to the population of North Cork and the surrounding area. The Catering Department supports the hospital’s day-to-day operations by delivering high-quality food services to patients, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
The Catering Assistant will be responsible for a range of duties typically associated with this grade, including (please confirm against the official Job Specification):
- Assisting with the preparation, plating, and service of meals for patients, staff, and visitors
- Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards in kitchen and catering areas in line with HACCP and food safety regulations
- Operating catering equipment safely and correctly
- Assisting with stock rotation, storage, and basic stock control
- Washing and sanitising crockery, cutlery, and kitchen equipment
- Adhering to portion control, special dietary, and menu requirements as directed
- Working as part of a team under the direction of the Catering Officer/Supervisor
- Complying with all relevant health and safety, infection control, and HSE policies and procedures
Requirements and Qualifications
Candidates should typically meet the following criteria for this grade (please confirm exact eligibility criteria against the official Job Specification):
- Demonstrate experience in a catering, food service, or similar support environment
- Hold or be willing to obtain a relevant food safety/HACCP certification
- Possess good communication and teamworking skills
- Be capable of undertaking the physical demands of the role, including standing for extended periods and manual handling
- Be flexible regarding working hours, including shift and weekend work as required
- Have the requisite health and character to carry out the duties of the post
Salary
Salary is in accordance with the Catering Assistant (Grade Code 4123) pay scale, effective 1 June 2026: €36,407 – €44,087 per annum (9-point scale). New entrants commence on the first point of the scale, with incremental progression subject to satisfactory performance.
