Clinical Nurse Manager 1 – Renal Virology Unit – Cork | Cork University Hospital

Cork University Hospital, part of the HSE South West region, is seeking an experienced Clinical Nurse Manager 1 to lead our specialized Renal Virology Unit in Wilton, Cork. This permanent full-time position offers the opportunity to manage complex kidney-related viral conditions in a leading teaching hospital environment.

About the Role

As Clinical Nurse Manager 1 for our Renal Virology Unit, you’ll oversee clinical operations for patients with kidney disease complicated by viral infections. This specialized role combines nephrology expertise with virology knowledge, requiring advanced clinical leadership in managing complex renal-viral co-morbidities. You’ll report to the Assistant Director of Nursing while leading a multidisciplinary team in delivering expert renal virology care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage daily clinical operations within the Renal Virology Unit, ensuring optimal patient outcomes for complex renal-viral conditions
  • Lead and supervise nursing staff in specialized renal virology protocols and evidence-based nephrology practices
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary care plans for patients with kidney disease and concurrent viral infections
  • Implement infection control measures specific to renal virology units and immunocompromised patients
  • Monitor clinical indicators and quality metrics for renal virology patient populations
  • Provide clinical education and mentorship to nursing staff on advanced nephrology and virology principles
  • Collaborate with consultant nephrologists, virologists, and infectious disease specialists on complex cases

Required Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or equivalent professional qualification
  • Current registration with NMBI (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland)
  • Minimum 5 years post-registration nursing experience with at least 2 years in renal/nephrology services
  • Demonstrated experience in renal virology, nephrology, or infectious diseases in immunocompromised patients
  • Proven leadership and team management experience in specialized clinical environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-graduate qualification in Nephrology, Infectious Diseases, or related specialty area
  • Experience with renal replacement therapies (dialysis, transplantation) and viral complications
  • Knowledge of immunosuppressive protocols and viral monitoring in renal patients
  • Previous management experience in renal units or virology departments
  • Understanding of renal virology research and evidence-based practices
