About the Role

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Diabetes Pump Therapy plays a key role within the Galway University Hospital diabetes service, providing expert nursing care for adults with Type 1 Diabetes who require insulin pump initiation and management.
This post supports the HSE’s Integrated Care Programme for Diabetes, ensuring that patients receive safe, evidence-based care and ongoing education to promote self-management, better glycaemic control, and improved quality of life.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Nursing, the post holder will work collaboratively across hospital and community settings, providing advanced clinical expertise, patient education, and professional leadership within the multidisciplinary diabetes team.


Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver specialist assessment, initiation, and follow-up of insulin pump therapy for adult Type 1 diabetes patients.
  • Develop and provide structured patient education programmes for insulin pump management and troubleshooting.
  • Act as a clinical resource and educator to other healthcare professionals involved in diabetes care.
  • Ensure the delivery of evidence-based, patient-centred care in accordance with HSE guidelines.
  • Participate in service development, audit, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance diabetes care pathways.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and contribute to multidisciplinary case discussions.
  • Undertake home visits and provide outreach across sites as required (own transport essential).

Required Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered General Nurse (RGN) on the active Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
  • Minimum of five years post-registration experience, with at least two years in diabetes care.
  • Post-graduate qualification in diabetes or a related specialty (or be willing to undertake same).
  • Full driving licence and access to own transport (to facilitate travel for home visits and cross-site work).

Desirable

  • Experience with insulin pump technologies and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems.
  • Strong patient education and teaching skills.
  • Experience working across acute and community care settings.
