Galway Roscommon Mental Health Services is recruiting a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Mental Health and Intellectual Disability (Speisialtóir Altra Cliniciúil, ID Sláinte Meabhrach) to join its specialist MHID team at St. Brigid’s Campus, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway. Two wholetime positions are available — one permanent and one temporary — offering an exceptional opportunity to advance your nursing career in a specialist mental health and intellectual disability setting within HSE West and North West.

Role Overview

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (Intellectual Disability) will operate within the Galway Roscommon Mental Health Services, delivering specialist nursing care across a range of complex mental health and intellectual disability presentations. Working to the core CNS concepts of clinical focus, patient and client advocacy, education and training, audit and research, and consultation, the successful candidates will provide expert nursing leadership across multiple care settings.

Key Responsibilities

The Clinical Nurse Specialist will demonstrate professional knowledge and expertise in the management and care of a wide range of disorders and dysfunctions across settings including:

  • Inpatient care
  • Continuing care environments
  • Promoting Independent Living programmes
  • Rehabilitation services
  • Managing Challenging Behaviours
  • Security and risk assessment and management
  • Deliberate self-harm response and care

In addition, the post holder will be required to undertake (or commit to undertaking within an agreed timeframe) the Nurse Prescribing of Medicinal Products Certificate, and to formally apply for entry onto the Interim ONMSD CNS database.

Requirements

Candidates must be able to demonstrate the necessary level of professional knowledge and clinical experience required for the Clinical Nurse Specialist grade, with particular expertise in mental health and intellectual disability nursing. Salary

€62,699 – €79,227 per annum (HSE Clinical Nurse Specialist (Intellectual Disability) scale, grade 2627, 11-point scale, plus long-service increments). Based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 June 2026 (Department of Health Circular 2/2026).

Location

Both positions are based at St. Brigid’s Administration Block, St. Brigid’s Campus, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, within Galway Roscommon Mental Health Services. A panel may be formed from this campaign to fill current and future permanent and specified purpose vacancies (full-time or part-time) for the Clinical Nurse Specialist, Mental Health Intellectual Disability grade across HSE West and North West.
