Consultant in Clinical Genetics – HSE West and North West – Galway, Sligo & Donegal

The Health Service Executive (HSE) is recruiting a Consultant in Clinical Genetics (Ref: MECG3862) to join the West and North West region, based primarily at University Hospital Galway, with sessions in Sligo University Hospital and Letterkenny University Hospital. This is a permanent, whole-time position within the public health service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-level clinical genetics services across the assigned hospitals.
  • Deliver diagnostic, therapeutic, and counseling services for patients with inherited conditions.
  • Support multidisciplinary care and advise on genetic testing and management plans.
  • Collaborate with regional and national genetic services to ensure quality of care.
  • Supervise and mentor junior medical staff and contribute to medical education.
  • Participate in service development, audit, and clinical governance activities.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Registered or eligible for registration on the Specialist Division (Clinical Genetics) of the Irish Medical Council.
  • Minimum of seven years’ postgraduate experience, including relevant training in clinical genetics.
  • Proven leadership and teaching ability within a hospital environment.
  • Strong communication, clinical decision-making, and teamwork skills.

Salary, Benefits & Working Hours

  • Grade: Consultant in Clinical Genetics (Code 1937).
  • Salary Scale (effective 1 August 2025): In accordance with the Department of Health Consolidated Salary Scales.
  • Contract Type: Permanent Wholetime.
  • Working Hours: 33 hours per week at University Hospital Galway, 2 hours each at Sligo and Letterkenny University Hospitals.
  • Public sector pension and leave entitlements apply under HSE terms and conditions.
