Sligo University Hospital, part of the HSE Saolta University Health Care Group, is seeking an experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist & General Physician for our dynamic gastroenterology department in Sligo. Job Overview
As Consultant Gastroenterologist, you’ll provide comprehensive gastroenterology and general internal medicine services within our established department. You’ll lead clinical decision-making, manage complex GI cases, and work collaboratively with our multidisciplinary teams while maintaining the highest standards of patient care. This position reports directly to the Clinical Director of Medicine.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead specialist gastroenterology clinics and provide expert consultation services
- Manage complex gastrointestinal disorders and coordinate multidisciplinary care pathways
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures including gastroscopy and colonoscopy
- Collaborate with surgical, oncology, and radiology teams for integrated patient management
- Ensure compliance with HSE clinical governance standards and best practice guidelines
- Participate in acute medical take and emergency gastroenterology consultations
- Contribute to teaching and mentoring of junior medical staff and trainees
Essential Qualifications
Education: Medical degree (MB BCh BAO or equivalent) with specialist training in Gastroenterology Experience: Minimum 5 years post-CCT experience in Gastroenterology + 3 years consultant-level practice Registration: Full registration with Medical Council of Ireland (IMC) and specialist division registration Skills: Advanced endoscopic skills, emergency gastroenterology management, multidisciplinary collaboration
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced gastroenterology subspecialty certification (IBD, Hepatology, or Endoscopy)
- Experience with therapeutic endoscopy procedures (ERCP, EUS)
- Leadership experience in clinical governance and quality improvement
- Additional general internal medicine expertise and acute care experience
