Portiuncula University Hospital is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Emergency Medicine on a permanent wholetime basis. This is a senior clinical leadership opportunity at one of the west of Ireland’s key acute hospitals, offering the chance to shape emergency care delivery for a large and diverse patient population across County Galway and the surrounding region.
Role Overview
The successful candidate will join the Emergency Department at Portiuncula University Hospital, providing expert clinical assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients presenting across the full spectrum of emergency and urgent care presentations. This is a substantive permanent post within HSE West and North West, contracted at 37 hours per week.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing senior clinical leadership and decision-making within the Emergency Department.
- Managing the assessment, investigation, and treatment of acutely unwell and injured patients.
- Contributing to the development and implementation of Emergency Department protocols, pathways, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Participating in on-call and rostered duties as required by the department.
- Supporting the training, education, and supervision of junior medical staff, NCHDs, and nursing colleagues.
- Engaging with hospital management, multidisciplinary teams, and HSE governance structures.
- Representing the department at relevant clinical, operational, and strategic forums.
Requirements
Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria set out in the Consultant Contract 2008 as applicable to Consultant in Emergency Medicine posts, and must hold specialist registration with the Medical Council of Ireland in the relevant specialist division. Salary and Contract
This post is remunerated in accordance with the Consultant Contract 2008 (New Entrant Clinicians from 1 October 2012), Table C1(1), HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 February 2026. The applicable salary range depends on the contract type agreed at appointment:
- Type A: €173,583 – €203,012 per annum (6-point scale)
- Type B: €199,515 – €230,539 per annum (6-point scale)
- Type C: €211,967 – €254,452 per annum (6-point scale)
The contract type is subject to agreement at the time of appointment. The post is permanent and wholetime at 37 hours per week.

Portiuncula University Hospital is a model 3 acute hospital located in Ballinasloe, County Galway, serving the populations of east Galway, south Roscommon, and north Tipperary. The hospital provides a broad range of acute medical, surgical, and emergency services and operates within the HSE West and North West health region. The Emergency Department manages a significant volume of attendances annually, and the Consultant in Emergency Medicine will play a central role in maintaining and developing the quality and safety of that service.
