HSE West and North West is recruiting Staff Midwives across multiple hospital sites in Galway, Sligo, Mayo, and Donegal. This campaign (Reference: SMID2026) offers permanent and specified purpose contracts on both a wholetime and part-time basis, making it an excellent opportunity for registered midwives at any stage of their career to join one of Ireland’s most dynamic regional health services.

Role Overview

As a Staff Midwife, you will provide high-quality, woman-centred midwifery care across the full continuum of maternity services. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to safe, evidence-based practice in a busy clinical environment while upholding the values and standards of the HSE and your professional registration body.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver safe, compassionate, and evidence-based midwifery care to women and their families throughout the antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal periods.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised care in line with clinical guidelines and best practice standards.
  • Maintain accurate and contemporaneous clinical records in accordance with professional and organisational requirements.
  • Collaborate effectively with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal outcomes for women and newborns.
  • Participate in the education and professional development of student midwives and colleagues.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, clinical audit, and the ongoing development of midwifery services.
  • Adhere to HSE policies, procedures, and guidelines, including those relating to health and safety and infection prevention and control.

Requirements

Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria as set out in the attached job specification. As a minimum, applicants are expected to hold current registration as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). Salary & Contract

€37,788 – €54,412 per annum (HSE Staff Midwife scale, 13-point scale, plus Long Service Increments up to €56,032 where applicable), based on the HSE Consolidated Salary Scales effective 1 February 2026. Pay for part-time or worksharing posts is calculated on a pro-rata basis. Permanent wholetime, permanent part-time, specified purpose wholetime, and specified purpose part-time contracts are available.

  • Sligo University Hospital (SUH), Sligo
