About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Consultant Physician in Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus to join our multidisciplinary team across three key locations in Cork. This innovative role combines hospital-based specialty care at Mallow General Hospital (16 hours per week) and Cork University Hospital (2.5 hours) with enhanced community care delivery through our North Cork Hub (18.5 hours), representing the future of integrated diabetes care.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead comprehensive endocrinology and diabetes services across hospital and community settings, ensuring seamless patient care transitions
- Provide specialist consultation and management for complex diabetes mellitus cases, endocrine disorders, and metabolic conditions
- Develop and implement enhanced community care protocols for diabetes management in the North Cork region
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including diabetes nurse specialists, dietitians, podiatrists, and primary care physicians
- Conduct outpatient clinics and inpatient consultations at Mallow General Hospital and Cork University Hospital
- Participate in emergency endocrine care and provide specialist input for acute diabetes complications
- Contribute to medical education and training of junior doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals in diabetes care
- Engage in quality improvement initiatives and clinical audit to enhance diabetes outcomes across the region
- Support telemedicine and digital health initiatives for enhanced community diabetes management
Required Qualifications
Essential Requirements
- Medical degree with full registration with the Medical Council of Ireland
- Specialist training in Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus with relevant postgraduate qualifications
- Minimum 5 years post-CCT experience in endocrinology and diabetes care
- Membership or Fellowship of appropriate Royal College (MRCPI, FRCP, or equivalent)
- Expertise in diabetes technology including insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring, and digital health platforms
- Strong clinical decision-making skills in complex endocrine and metabolic disorders
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in community-based diabetes care and integrated care models
- Research experience in diabetes or endocrinology with published work
- Leadership experience in clinical service development or quality improvement
- Additional qualifications in diabetes education or lifestyle medicine
- Experience with Enhanced Community Care or similar integrated healthcare models
